As time goes by, you find some 'not so well known' applications that are really really handy. Give it a few months, and you try and remember one of them, just to find you forget.
Thus I started this list, as a means to remember those little gems.
- Print to PDF / Email any 'printout as PDF' in windows:
Program: PDFCreator LINK: http://www.pdfforge.org/products/pdfcreator/download Really handy, as you can send any printout to a pdf saved file, or directly email any printout as a pdf from windows. I used this program to circumvent an issue with my wife's laptop, where MYOB accounting package did not want to send emails (Can't find MAPI32.dll) None of the 'how to fix' resolutions on the web helped for me (Either an issue with Vista, or Thunderbird used in conjunction with MYOB) Using this program she can now email her invoices again.
- Parental Internet Content filtering for windows
Program: K9 LINK: http://www1.k9webprotection.com/ Free 'netnanny' type of software to allow you as a parent to filter internet for a child.
- uPnP Media server
Program: MediaTomb LINK: www.mediatomb.cc Server media to uPnP enabled devices on your network. Highly configurable, and can make use of external defined software to transcode media to device
- Linux console based wireless signal/noise monitor
Program: wavemon Install via apt using sudo aptitude install wavemon I use this to test monitor my console based machine's wireless signal strength, to help set the antenna in the best location for best performance
- Remote torrent download management
Program: TorrentFlux LINK: www.torrentflux.com Remote management and download of torrent via http interface.
- SCP on Windows (copy Files to/from Linux without samba shares)
Program: WinSCP LINK: winscp.net At home I only run Linux,so I only use scp or rsync to copy files about. No need to install SAMBA, and have unsecure shares about my network. Sometimes Windows does invade my space, and to copy files to / from any windows based machine I use this little proggy. Nice win commander interface.
- Acer Aspire 1700 Service Manual
Not really a program, but as I have spent hours hunting this down (without having to pay for fixing my sister in law's laptop), I will link to the document here. The site requires a free registration, and was instant. Download is then free. - Multi-platform video encoding program I have used
Program: Handbrake LINK:http://handbrake.fr/ HandBrake is an open-source, GPL-licensed, multiplatform, multithreaded video transcoder, available for MacOS X, Linux and Windows.
- Control multiple Pc's from one single pc (share KB and Mouse to multiple Pc's)
Program: Synergy LINK:http://synergy2.sourceforge.net/ Synergy lets you easily share a single mouse and keyboard between multiple computers with different operating systems, each with its own display, without special hardware. It's intended for users with multiple computers on their desk since each system uses its own monitor(s).
- DVDShrink for Linux
Think WIndows DVD Shrink - To shrink DVD9 to DVD5, or to remove DVD Zone locks Program: K9Copy DO NOT MAKE ILLEGAL COPIES
- Monitor allowed bandwidth Cap usage
Program: Net Usage Item (plugin for Firefox)
